As a case study of Web3D technology and its application, we have developed a system that supports the creation of classical ballet choreography in 3D environments. The system allows users to interactively create various choreographies on the Web and to represent them as 3DCG animation. The data were captured from professional dancers performances using motion capture systems. The archive has exhaustively accumulated motion data of basic ballet steps for lessons. We discuss the structural analysis of ballet motion and possible connections between basic ballet steps. This allows users to choreograph easily and to avert creating illogical choreographic sequences.
As a case study of Web3D technology and its application, we have developed some systems which support to create classical ballet choreography. In this paper, we discuss our new system, which is called ``Web3D Dance Composer." The system consists of the motion archive and the simulation system. The archive has accumulated 3D human motion data of basic ballet steps segmented. The data were captured from demonstrations of professional dancers using motion capture systems. The simulation system allows ballet teachers to create various choreographies for lessons and to represent them as 3DCG animation. We discuss the segmentation for ballet motion and the structural analysis of it as preparation for the simulation. Then we discuss the standardization of motion data to share them in the Web environment and the creation method of 3DCG animation to simulate choreographies. We also discuss the evaluation of the system.
This research approach focuses on sharing 3D animation data over the Web and creating a system capable of animating virtual ballet performances. Sharing motion data on the Internet allows anyone to access various artistic dances all over the world. In addition to this, these motion data can be applied in online systems for educational and artistic purposes. I present Web3D Dance Composer, which enables the creation and editing of classical ballet animation based on VRML. This system allows anyone to easily create and simulate artistic ballet performances as well as realistic stage effects. Since it is important for classical ballet to provide an artistic harmony from both dance choreography and stage&scenario effects, this system can be useful for teachers and choreographers to simulate their performance in advance. This system also allows artists opportunities and possibilities to express their feelings.
We have developed a web-based interactive choreography simulation system for classic ballet. Using our proposed system, one can easily compose and simulate classic ballet dance using the motion data captured from a professional dancer. This system allows ballet teachers to create various choreographies for lessons in a short time. The Java Applet allows us to interactively edit and play created animations written in VRML on the Web. We integrate several functions such as previewing, controlling speed and editing to support composing some steps. We also integrate selecting human model, background and dancers' formation as a display control system. We verified that our system can successfully simulate some chains of steps in actual lessons, and we identified some functions requiring improvement before our system can be widely used.
For sharing motion captured data on the Internet, we constructed a motion data archive for ballet (academic dance) based on the VRML H-anim, the standard description method for a hierarchic human model and its animation. We also constructed the composing system for ballet on the World Wide Web by using this motion data archive. This standardization allowed us to effectively reuse the motion data.

We have developed a 3-dimensional animation sys-tem based on hierarchic human body techniques and its motion data. Using our proposed system, one can easily compose and simulate classic ballet dance in real-time on the Net. Our goal is to develop and integrate several modules into a system capable of animating realistic vir-tual ballet stages in a real-time performance. This in-cludes modeling and representing virtual dancers with high realism, as well as simulating choreography and various stage effects. For handling motion data more eas-ily, we have developed a new action description code based on "Pas" which is a set of fundamental movements for classic ballet. This paper explains our proposed mo-tion description method for classic ballet and several functions of the composing system we developed.
We have proposed "Buyo-fu", a new description and segmentation method for dance based on a style of dancing technique. Using "Buyo-fu" method, we implemented a prototype of three-dimensional motion picture database which accumlates classic ballet steps. About 300 steps performed by professional ballet dancers were changed into motion data using a magnetic motion capture system. We also developed motion retrieval system for the database and motion generation system which enables new choreograpy. Some advantages and disadvantages of the proposed method and the efficiency of the systems are discussed.
